Go Birding
Kerala Backwaters & ResortsThe Thattekad Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary and the Bird Sanctuary at Kumarakom are indeed a treat for bird lovers.

The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is located on the banks of the river Periyar surrounded by lagoons. It has a wide variety of flora and fauna. Pakshi Eldhose, a renowned bird watcher, will be your guide for the journey. Kerala Backwaters & Resorts is planning a few eco-tourism initiatives around the area including tree house, home stay, resort etc.

The bird sanctuary at Kumarakom spread over 14 acres is a favourite haunt of migratory birds like the Siberian stork, and other exotic species of birds such as the egret, darter, heron, waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, water duck, parrot, larks, flycatchers, wood beetle and teal, making it an ornithologist's paradise. Pathiramanal (sands of midnight), an enchanting island on the lake, can be accessed by boat from here. This 10-acre island on the backwaters is home to many rare varieties of migratory birds from different parts of the world. A cruise along the Vembanad Lake is the best way to experience the sanctuary.

NB: Don’t be cheated by any other Hornbill Nature Camps or bird guides posing as Eldhose as many have been found misusing this name….
